If this world is the creation of a perfect most merciful and all-knowing God, why does it know wars, sicknesses, much misery, destruction and suffering? Does He not care what is happening to people as they die hard deaths of starvation and poverty?
First of all, evil was the price of freedom that Allah bestowed upon us. If we didn’t have the choice to do wrong or do right, freedom will lose its meaning. And from wrongdoings evil was born. And the only alternative is that humans would be born forced to do good, and thus, lose their freedom (or become much like angels).
Secondly, good and evil are two sides of the same coin. Floods have the evil side and the good one. Earthquakes, volcanos, and natural disasters in their overall view have a beneficial service in restoring the equilibrium between the burning core of the earth and the superficial solid crustal.
The earthquakes work on returning the mountains to their former places and the mountains as we know are what give the crustal weight, and without it, the surface would blow away because of the pressure that the core exerts on it.
Thirdly, you cannot judge a story based on one chapter, a child might cry because his mother did not allow him to close the car’s door, for he did not realize he was going to crush his fingers by doing so, therefore he only focused about not getting what he wanted. Forward chapters will permit to realize that previous harsh chapters were worth the endurance.
Fourthly, it is obvious that what builds character and its rigidity is tightly related to what one sustains of hardship. And there will be no meaning to forgiveness with no abuse and to mercy with no pain and to justice with no injustice.
And from hardship and patience, and from pain and its endurance the best of character arise.
Fifthly, evil does not exist in its origin, but it is the absence of good, and it is merely linked to us being imperfect creatures. And the only alternative is for us to be created perfect, thus Gods, which is illogical. (What is the need of having a diversity of Gods while the One and Only is highly sufficient.)
At last, as Muslims, we believe we are rewarded for every atom of suffering we receive.
According to us, the mercy of Allah doesn’t mean that everything will be the way we want it to be, as for the Hadith goes:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him”.
وعن أبي يحيى صهيب بن سنان رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم “عجبا لأمر المؤمن إن أمره كله له خير، وليس ذلك لأحد إلا للمؤمن : إن أصابته سراء شكر فكان خيراً له، وإن أصابته ضراء صبر فكان خيراً له” ((رواه مسلم)).
